Thanks, Buck, for posting the excellent video on polyvagal theory (Re.
discoveries of Dr. Stephen Porges). He mentions oxytocin, (the "love molecule")
(re: Dr. Paul Zak), who makes the connection between excitation of this
neurotransmitter and the experience of love; as well as moral development.
For those who don't have time to review the video, polygonal theory
introduces a third group of structures as par of the ANS (Autonomic Nervous
system); thus 1. Sympathetic, 2. Parasympathetic, and 3. The social
development nervous system centered on structures in the vagus nerve. The
higher mammals display some of the manifestations of this 3rd type of system;
by way of example, we have all seen the "cute" pics of interspecies love, say a
hippo cuddling with a tortoise, etc. Porges goes on to make the evolutionary
connection (phylogenetic), the bottom line being that the higher mammals are
more developed socially and exhibit correspondingly greater development in the
polyvagal structures.
Now we come to the bottom line: how to active the polyvagal structures and
crank out the all-important "love" molecule, oxytocin. Porges mentions
meditation and chanting as two methods.
Dr. Paul Zak also mentions meditation but states that to generate more
oxytocin, the meditator must have thouights of compassion towards others.
Looks like this leaves out TM, since interjecting particular thoughts and
feelings into TM would qualify as "mood making", contrary to the given
instructions.
Conclusion: meditation in general may activate the polyvagal system, but more
of the key ingredient (lthe "love-molecule" oxytocin) is generated with
deliberately introducing feels of compassion for others.
Here's the Paul Zak list of the 10 most effective means to heal generate
oxytocin.:
