I don't think so. It was Britain that put wartime bills onto the national
credit card.
(FACT: in 2015 Britain finally paid off the last of its World War One debts!)

It really seems to have been the massive increase in expenditure of the US
government that kick-started your economy which in turn created a "virtuous
circle" of greater profits and larger pay packets. Win-win.

If so, I can't see why doing the same thing in peace time but spending the
money on homes and hospitals wouldn't have the same effect today. This is why
economics has always been a complete mystery to me.

Re "We got punked with Hitler and Japan":

And yet the USA emerged from WWII not only as top nation but super wealthy.

I never understood that. How can you splurge all those dollars on warships,
tanks, aircraft, . . . , not to mention the ginormous expense of the atom bomb,
. . . and all those bombs, bullets and shells "thrown away", and instead of
becoming bankrupt you end up filthy rich.

Cleopatra was defeated. The Romans then confiscated the immense treasure of
Egypt. So a profitable enterprise for Octavian. I get that. But the USA didn't
ransack Japan or Germany.

Is there an economist in the house?

Who needs an army? Who needs a police force? Just think of all the freebies we
could have if we didn't have to pay for either.

You're being punked, Mike. It's all theater to get you to accept giving up
your personal freedoms. Here I thought you conservatives were all about those
freedoms?

   MD,

Theconditions in the Middle East and the rest of the world have changed. The
world cannot allow the cancer of ISIS to fester in Iraq as it sends death and
mayhem to the rest of the world. The coalition of world governments should act
in unity to stop this disease of the world. The US should not act unilaterally
and fight this battle alone. The world of nations should act together to make
a global transformation to eliminate the ISIS doctrine of committing crimes
against humanity for the sake of an heretical view of Islam.

Thisrecent move may be a futile effort considering that the Iraqi Army
doesn't want to fight a formidable foe. In strategic terms, the US may
eventually have to send American troops to Iraq again to clear out the Islamist
foes--although is would violate Kerry's recent talks with the Iraqi Prime
Minister. In astrological terms, this recent development is in keeping with
the predicted major battle by summer.
