And I've read posts on liberal forums where folks who retired and got
these kinds of pensions said they didn't need them. They either owned
their house or downsized. They questioned the efficacy of such pensions
and especially that they were putting city governments into hardship.
But if you look at the typical city council they are filled with real
estate people voting for their own best interests and passing pension
plans that keep them in office. Real revolution begins at bottom up.
Clean out your corrupt city government (that is if you can stay alive
doing so).
And yup, many unions are corrupt too going way beyond why they came into
being in the first place. I was a member of the American Federation
of Musicians (AFL-CIO) and they were way out of touch with the changing
times. Even the local symphony orchestra broke away and formed their
own union.

Yabut pensions didn't used to be so large and thus difficult to fund.
It's a pinch on city budgets and why they keep raising taxes and fines.

To have these overblown pension funds Wall Street had to be in on
it. Local governments and unions lack the expertise to implement
anything like that. Remember that Dubya wanted to turn over Social
Security to Wall Street. What will happen is the promised pensions
won't be there when many of these people retire.
You do have to wonder though why someone didn't ask "how is this even
going to work?" The answer would have been "well hell, it's boom
time forever."

They pay well and get lured to sign on the promise they'll keep
getting paid well into retirement which of course is ludicrous. That
was just a scheme that Wall Street cooked up to get their hands on
that pension money. Pensions weren't meant to keep paying you what
you earned when working but instead to help out in old age. Trying
to fund those accounts is crippling city governments.

The scandal was apparently going on in some of the other
communities is the Bay Area. This is what happens when you hire
stupid people as cops. They don't like to hire smart people.
