I would take this article with a grain of salt in some regards.  
 

For example, information in this article stating what the Dalai Llama's "views" 
are on homosexuality can be traced back verbatim (indicating that the author 
lifted it) to an article written back in 1997.  What he states, translated in 
the proper context on that topic, is not what *he* necessarily believes today, 
but what the early Tibetan Buddhist scripture stated.  The Dalai Llama *does 
not have the authority to rewrite scripture* (noted on Wikipedia).  Also, he is 
not the spiritual leader of the Buddhist tradition; he is a monk and his role 
is specific to Tibet.
