LONDON: Hindu preachers and religious workers such as bhandaris
arriving to ply their trade in the UK will not be forced to undergo
fast-track British socialization and don't need to prove they're
more British than other recent immigrants in order to stay on here,
the government has announced in a significant U-turn greeted with
relief by the country's large Hindu community.

The government climbdown on strict new rules for foreign-born
preachers of all faiths came after a storm of protest by Britain's
Hindus, Sikhs and sections of the Muslim community.

All three faith communities normally import preachers and other
religious workers to undertake pastoral and non-pastoral duties for
the UK's minority religious groups.

But the proposed new rules, which would have required pujaris,
bhandaris and imams alike to take the so-called "test of
Britishness" within two years of arriving in this country, would
have meant a potential shortage of bhandaris by 2010, Hindu
community leaders told TOI on Tuesday.
