He was one of those troubled geniuses. A gifted professional artist -
irrepressively creative in many ways in addition to his art: as a gardener,
cook, sculptor, landscaper, etc. But a real mess. WWII really blew him away.
He was a sensitive young man, as you might expect, and couldn't handle the
horrors of war. (He was a radio operator and gunner in the Air Force, and
shot down two zeros.)
