The median salary for an "experienced senior physicist"
was $106,716 as of December 2005, according to this site:

http://www.jupiterscientific.org/sciinfo/sciencesalaries.html

The 75th percentile for a "tier V" physicist (eight-plus
years of experience) was $115,372, so Hagelin's definitely
at the high end of the range, but as you say, not
outrageous (unless the filing you saw was from many years
ago).
