4. USA: Study: Walking helps depressed patients
<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?

Just 30 minutes of brisk walking a day can immediately lift
depression,
researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, USA, have found.
Depressed
patients and another group who sat quietly for 30 minutes both
reported
reductions in negative feelings such as tension, depression, anger,
and
fatigue.

But only the group that exercised said they felt good after the
session,
according to the study, published in the December issue of the
journal,
Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.

5. ICELAND: Study finds important diabetes gene
<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?

A study conducted by an Icelandic team of researchers concluded that
a
single genetic change could predispose close to 40 per cent of the
population to type-2 diabetes. The study could help in the
development of an
easy test for diabetes risk.

6. USA: Study finds exercise helps delay dementia

Older people who get light exercise, such as walking, at least three
times a
week are less likely to develop Alzheimer's or other types of
dementia, a
study published Tuesday in the Annals of Internal Medicine stated.

7. USA: Yoga brings peace to busy youth
<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?

Yoga teachers have found that more children are taking advantage of
the
beneficial effects of meditation and yoga. Parents are increasingly
turning
to meditation for their kids, to help them counteract stress in
their daily
lives.

8. USA: Study: Low-calorie diet keeps heart young
<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?

Researchers at Washington University in St Louis, USA, have released
findings of what they called the first-ever human study to
demonstrate the
cardiac benefits of a restricted calorie diet. The findings
confirmed that a
very low-calorie yet nutritionally balanced diet helps the heart age
more
slowly.

9. INDIA: India's Ayurvedic doctors to teach in US medical colleges
<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?

The Indian government has approved a plan to promote the study of the
ancient system of Ayurvedic medicine in the US. Under the proposal,
Indian
Ayurvedic doctors will teach in 10 US medical colleges, and the
Indian
government will cover the cost of the programme.

10. USA: More good news about meditation: Study finds Transcendental

it to
be effective in lowering cholesterol build-up, and reducing risk of
stroke
and heart attack, the American Heart Association journal reported.

offer meditation to employees
<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/business-news-a.html?

Time magazine reported that as a result of more sophisticated brain
scanning
technology, researchers are finding that meditation directly affects
the
structure and function of the brain, creating increased attention
span,
sharper focus of attention, and improved memory. Corporations are
taking
note of the benefits for business.

12. USA: Schools offer healthier vegetarian lunches
<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?
art=11368570563078469>

For years, school cafeterias in the US have offered vegetarian
lunches, but
the food was often bland and greasy. Student demand, concerns over
the
obesity rate in US children, and commitment to giving students the
building
blocks for academic excellence have prompted changes in the
direction of
proper meal nourishment in some US schools.

13. TURKEY: Government to ban smoking
<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?

Zambia is continuing its ban on importing genetically-modified (GM)

despite pressures of a population desperately needing food. The
government
vows not to give in to pressures to relax their policy, in the
interest of
maintaining a country not reliant on GM food.

15. USA: Study: Meditation lengthens lifespan
<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?

A research study published in the American Journal of Cardiology has
shown
that the practice of Transcendental Meditation leads to improved
health in
many categories and leads to increased lifespan.

The study, based on the health statistics over an 18-year period of
a group
of 203 individuals with high blood pressure and an average age of 71
years,
reported that the TM practice reduced the death rate and promoted
longevity.

natural and traditional systems of healthcare, including Ayurveda, a
premier
social security organization has decided to bear the full
expenditure for
setting up medical facilities under the Indian System of Medicine
for the
first five years.

<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news.html#postive3>

Botswana became the first African country to offer free AIDS
treatment in
2002 with the government paying more than 90 per cent of the costs.
The
nation, with more than a third of adults infected, now has half the
people
in immediate need on life-prolonging medicines. Botswana's
commitment to
fighting the pandemic has shown that treatment is possible on the
world's
poorest continent.

18. CHINA: Herbal remedies treat the whole person
<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?
art=11363236582126598>

Hong Kong's government is stockpiling 'Tamiflu', the Western drug to
be
prescribed in case of a deadly super-flu outbreak; but they are also
encouraging the use of traditional Chinese medicine to help prevent,
and
control, a pandemic. Traditional practitioners believe that western
medicine
is about treating symptoms, but Chinese herbal medicine is about
treating
the whole person and is better for the body.

19. SCOTLAND: Fifty per cent of children under two fed on organic
food
<http://www.globalgoodnews.com/health-news-a.html?
art=11362578212009386>

In Scotland, organic food for infants outsells organic food for
adults, and
half of the children under the age of two are fed on wholly organic
food.
Because parents want the very best for their children, they will buy
the
more expensive organic food for their babies even though they cannot
afford
it for themselves.
