I've always felt that Islam was more of a political movement than a religion but then many people think the roots of Christianity were actually a political movement. Mohamed was concerned with the tribal wars in the region and that many of the war lords were doing rituals to "pagan" gods to achieve power. So he dreamt up this religion with "one true God" to try to calm the tribal wars. There is an excellent documentary on this (mostly Iranian produced) either from PBS or National Geographic (I don't remember which and maybe it was both) on DVD.
