It could also be caused by the Levi-Butler-Effect.

And what, you ask, is the Levi-Butler-Effect?

The Levi-Butler-Effect is the predisposition of cults that claim 
their system of self-development reduces crime to not report crimes 
to the proper authorities when crimes are committed.
