So have you ever done any of this stuff? I did sport jiu-jitsu for
about 4 years till I dislocated my shoulder. It is a tough sport,
even at the sport level without strikes. I have applied that
side-mount armbar and had it applied to me many times. Royce got his
elbow joint popped for sure. I really couldn't understand how
lethargic he seemed. It was like he was in slow motion and Matt was
in fast forward. I was holding on to the to the past and dreaming of
him returning. Because he got so totally owned I have to concede that
the sport he helped create has passed him by.
What a lion Royce was in his day! After seeing him win UFC2 in that
fascinating body-chess way, I went out the next week and joined a jiu
jiu-jitsu dojo. There were no Brazilian teachers in DC then so it
taught traditional jiu-jitsu and Sambo grappling. I had a core of
friends who would study the Renzo Gracie instructional tapes and
apply the Brazilian strategy to our matches in class. Very quickly we
could hang with the black belts just based on the brilliance of the
guard strategy. Just before my brown belt test, after about 3 years,
a Gracie trained teacher opened up a school and we all joined and
happily put on white belts again. We knew what belt had real meaning.
Now we were no longer big fish in a small pond and got completely
owed by his students! It was so humbling. On the first day my
teacher (Mario Yamasaki now UFC ref) had me put him in my guard and
see what I could do. By his shifting slightly whenever I tried to
move to sweep, I was completely helpless even in the superior
position! What a wake up call about real Brazilian style. After
about a year I got my shoulder popped and I played a few gigs in a
shoulder harness. I had surgery to repair the damage, not fun! I
decided it was too rough for me. But I loved it and still roll with
some of my friends as a workout.
Here is a great jiu jitsu forum :
http://www.jiujitsugear.com/forum/index.php?board=2.0 They already
have the Royce fight up and they always have good commentary on the
sport from guys in it. They also post a bunch of great fights videos
and will have all the interviews from Royce and Matt when they come out.
I did think Matt was a very classy winner. He showed respect for my
fallen hero, after completely tooling him. It really is a new era in
mixed martial arts.
