And some people will even believe Vaj.

Obviously MMY isn't in any of the other three ashramas 
(student, forest dweller, or renunciate); obviously he
has worldly responsibilities; obviously he also has a
family he is still in contact with.  As Vaj knows,
there's no other stage in which MMY belongs, and he fits
the householder stage in every respect except for the lack
of wife and kids.  But he's surely not the only Hindu male
in history who didn't marry following his student years.
Is Vaj trying to claim such men are ashramaless?

Vaj would call MMY a liar no matter *what* ashrama
he'd said he was in, of course.  MMY's damned if he
does, damned if he doesn't.
