It's very Easy Off, we don't solve the ethnic problems in
Iraq. They will. We have liberated them from a tyrant that has made the world a
slightly safer place to be and helped them write their own constitution and
elect leaders and form a government who's responsibility it will be to solve age
old ethnic problems fairly and equitably in a democratic manner. Mean while we
also build and train a new Iraqi Army and police force that will support that
government in enforcing it's laws and dealing with those problems. An army
or police force isn't built over night. It's much more than going through basic
training. There is also specialized training and gaining
experience, confidence, building moral, a new officer corp, structure
and the trust of the people. Once this is accomplished, Iraqis
can solve their own problems democratically and we can leave the country.
So you see Off, there is no "Quagmeyer", just a lot of work that is being done
and the pay off can effect the whole region. We have already broken the link
between Syria, Iraq and Iran and their support for Hezbollah. Sanctions have
been lifted, which prior to the war, were blamed for the deaths of tens of
thousands of innocent civilians and were also being undermined by the very
countries that imposed them. Outstanding debts have been either forgiven or
greatly reduced and the extermination of the marsh Arabs has ceased and I
believe their wetlands restored or are in the process of being restored. So
Off,again there is no Quagmeyer, because our goal is not to solve their
problems, but to give them the tools to solve their own problems and democracy
is the way to go, not some dictatorship. Now I know, "But, is it worth 2500
American lives" or whatever the final number is, is many peoples question. If we
could have done the same thing in Germany with the rise of Hitler in the
early or mid thirties, would it have been worth it? You bet it would
have!
