"Fairfield, Iowa, is one of "12 Great Places You've Never Heard Of," according to the August-September issue of Mother Earth News. "Great Places," according to the magazine, range in size from Blue Hill, a small arts community of 2,346 residents half way up the cost of Maine, to St. George, a town of 59,780 in the southwest corner of Utah near Zion National Park. Fairfield, with 9,459 residents, has "more restaurants per capita than San Francisco," and is "a surprisingly sustainable and cosmopolitan town," the magazine says.
