his bedroom, and locked himself in. Several hours went by. The
ashram was very small in those days, and not only was it unheard of
for Baba to leave the Gita session, but no one had ever known him to
lock himself in his room like that. In the middle of the morning,
the phone rang. It was a call from Bombay giving the news that one
of Baba's devotees had died. The ashram secretary went to tell Baba.
He knocked on his door, but there was no answer. Finally, several
hours later, Baba called the secretary. "You wanted to tell me
something this morning? he asked.
"Baba, I received a phone call..."
"Yes, I know you rceived a phone call," Baba said. "I know he is
gone; that is why I was here inside. I wanted to make sure his
journey was clear. Whatelse is the Guru meant for?"

In the middle of the night, a devotee of Baba's woke up in her
Bombay apartment with chest pains. She wa afraid that she was having
a heart attack, but she didn't want to wake her husband, who was
asleep in the next bed. At three o'clock, the phone rang. Her
husband anwerer it. When he hung up, he said, "That was Baba. I told
him you were sleeping. He said to tell you that nothing is wrong.
Why do you think he said that? Is something the matter?"
"Yes, ther is. I thought I was having a heart attack," the woman
said.
"I can't believe this," said her husband. "I'm here in the same room
with you and Baba's 75 kilometers away at the ashram, and he knows
more about what's happening to you then I do".

Howard was a scientist, but he was also a psychic with the odd gift
of being able to enter into the consciousness of others and diagnose
their physical and emotional disturbances. Hearing of Baba from a
friend, he decided to attend a retreat Baba was conducting in a
nearby city. He had the idea that at the retreat he would be able to
use his psychic gift to enter into Baba's state and somehow get from
him whatever Baba had to give. He would get it quickly, he thought,
leave, and that would be that.
As Baba was beginning his opening lecture, Howard decided that this
was the moment to effect his psychic merger. He stared into Baba's
eyes and tried to merge his consciousness into Baba's. But he met a
wall which he could not penetrate. No matter what he did, Baba's
consciousness remained closed to him.
Finally, he began to address Baba inwardly. "Please let me
experience your consciousness." Suddenly, the barrier was down, and
Howard found himself inside Baba's awareness. It was like being
tossed on a boundless flood of light, a powerful current of
awareness, so fast and so overwhelming that Howard thought he was
going to drown in it.
"Baba, please, I can't take it," he cried inwardly. At that moment
the inner flood calmed and Howard was able to open his eyes. He
looked up to see Baba sitting in his chair looking straight at him
with an amused smile on his face, shaking his forefinger as if to
say, "Be careful!"

When Baba came to Piedmont, CA at the beginning of his 2nd world
tour, a big reception was held for his arrival. Hundreds of people
came to welcom him...spiritual seekers from all over the Bay Area.
The program went on until very late. The next morning, the boy who
was supposed to open the meditation hall overslept and instead of
arriving to open the doors at 4:00 am, he did not arrive until 4:30.
As he came down the stairs, he saw that the door was open and that a
familiar shadowy figure in an orange ski cap and a lulnghi was
ushering everyone inside. It was Baba. "when you tell people that
the hall will open at 4:00," he said, "you shoud be ther at 4:00 to
open it. Always keep your promises."

Bob was the pot-man in the kitchen. One day, he was adding the
flavoring to the soup, pouring from a heavy pan into the deep vat of
boiling liquid, when he dropped the pan into the soup. Without
thinking, he reached in and pulled the pot out. He was waring heavy
gloves, but the boiling soup poured into them, scalding his hands.
For a moment there was complete confusion. Suddenly, Baba walked in.
He took in the situation at a glance. He made Bab sit down and
directed someone to pull off his gloves and plunge his arms into ice
warter. The burns were enormous. Standing over him, Baba began to
stroke Bob's hands and arms. "Don't worry," he said, "my Baba will
take care of you. There won't be any pain, and there won't be any
marks. My Baba will take care of you". Form many minutes, Baba stood
speaking softely to Bob in the hushed kitchen while his burns were
dressed. Finally, he told someone to take Bob off to bed.
The next day, one of Bob's friends went to see him and found him
lying in bed with enormous blisters on his arms.
"How are you?" his friend asked.
"I'm great", Bob whispered. "I've never felt so happy in my life."
During the whole 2 weeks of his healing, he experienced no pain. And
when the healing was completed, there were no scars. But even more
remarkable was the inner change in him. From having been rather slow
and inattentive, Bob became careful and focused. It was as if some
barrier of dullness had been stripped from his mind.

A baby cobra had fallen into the well. All morning, the ashram boys
had tried to fish it out, but the cobra had eluded them. Finally,
Baba came. He stood over the well and called to the cobra, "Come on,
get into the bucket." The cobra did not move. At that, Baba
shouted, "What's wrong, don't you trust me? Get into the bucket!"
The cobra got into the bucket and they hauled him up and set him
free.

The wiring in the old building which was to become the Oakland
Ashram was antiquated and dangerous. One day, an electrician was
trying to fix a short circuit in the lines. When he opened up the
box, he saw such a tangle of wires that he didn't know which ones to
connect, and he was terrified to touch them for fear of being
electrocuted. As he was standing there wondering what to do, Baba
came by.
"What is it?" he asked. The electrician pointed to the tangle of
wires and made a gesture of hopelessness. Baba leaned over,
scrutinized the wires, and he pointed to 2 of them. When the
electrician connected them, the whole system worked.
