It's very common in high-profile cases. Something like 200 people apparently confessed to the murder of the Lindbergh baby in the 1930s. The interesting thing is that the guy is so transparently bogus that the DA has to know the confession is fake, which means she must have some *other* good reason for arresting him. She practically spelled it out in her press conference, explaining that sometimes arrests are made before all the evidence is in when public safety is at risk. I'm guessing they think he's dangerous for some reason but don't have enough evidence to take him into preventive custody on those grounds, so they based the arrest on stuff he's said in emails and in letters to Patsy Ramsey about the JonBenet murder, even though they're pretty sure he wasn't involved in it. That's the only thing I can think of that makes any sense at all, at any rate.
