Yes, it's because yahoo gives groups the option of making the archives public, rather than restricted, and we switched to that when we moved the group to restricted membership. Restricted membership means no one can join without being approved by a moderator, something we did solely to deal with a rapidly growing problem with adult-related spam, and opening the archives to the public would allow those who wanted to join to be able to read the messages on the group message page while waiting for their membership to be approved. It has other advantages, such as allowing those on campus or Purusha/MD who want to be especially discreet to read the messages without having to use their email addresses to join, and allowing members to access the group pages without having to sign in with their yahoo ID first, and making the archives open to search engines. The latter has brought in new members. --- shempmcgurk <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > --- In [email protected], Rick Archer > <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > on 9/5/06 11:44 AM, shempmcgurk at [EMAIL PROTECTED] > wrote: > > > > > >> > --- In [email protected] > > >> <mailto:FairfieldLife%40yahoogroups.com> > > >> > , Rick Archer <groups@> wrote: > > >>> >> > > >>> >> See > http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FairfieldLife/messages/1 > > >>> >> > > >>> >> 1159 Members > > >>> >> > > >>> >> 112,768 posts, an average of 22,553 per > year, 62 per day > > >>> >> > > >>> >> Let¹s Party! > > >>> >> > > >> > > > >> > The stat that really stands out to me is the > 1,159 members > one. > > >> > > > >> > Certainly, only a fraction are active on the > forum at any > given time > > >> > (20 maximum maybe?). > > >> > > > >> > And I can only imagine that only a fraction > look in on a daily > > >> > basis -- 10%? 20% > > > > > Even that may be a generous estimate.
