Yes, it's because yahoo gives groups the option of
making the archives public, rather than restricted, 
and we switched to that when we moved the group to
restricted membership. Restricted membership means no
one can join without being approved by a moderator,
something we did solely to deal with a rapidly growing
problem with adult-related spam, and opening the
archives to the public would allow those who wanted to
join to be able to read the messages on the group
message page while waiting for their membership to be
approved. It has other advantages, such as allowing
those on campus or Purusha/MD who want to be
especially discreet to read the messages without
having to use their email addresses to join, and
allowing members to access the group pages without
having to sign in with their yahoo ID first, and
making the archives open to search engines. The latter
has brought in new members.
