I don't grow apples for a living, so the economics are different, 
but I have a fuji apple tree and the way I avoid the worms is to 
look at the apples when they are about an inch in diameter. The 
worms are visible from the bottom so I just pick off the wormy ones, 
which is OK because to get larger fruit I thin out about a hundred 
apples at that stage anyway. Also have avocados and lemons and 
everything is 100% organic, no spray of anything, ever.
