I was told a few years ago by a fulltime, "in the know" person in the TMO that
at least half
of the 87 mil was lost in a poor quality investment in a stock market overseas
(I think
Europe) that tanked. It was not invested prudently, to say the least. A small
portion did go
to expenses in trying to put together a group of pundits for a while. Is this
explanation
true? Who knows.
I don't think anyone - even Bobananda - can suggest that the TMO provides any
financial
info on investments or the basic whereabouts of donations, let alone a real
independent
firm accounting. I think at this point, anyone who gives money recognizes
this. You give
the money, it is totally out of your control and you will never know how it is
used, period.
The next question is where the money goes. There have been enough independent
reports
from people who have taught in India or been around MMY to make a very good
case that
some money is going to MMYs family - probably a lot. For now, you just don't
know. This
is how it is, period. These are both bad situations. Some people do not care
that much
because they just want to give to Maharishi, or get the recognition and
closeness to him
(and let's be honest, all organzations seem to work this way, where giving gets
you on the
inside. At least with other than TMO orgs you usually know how the money is
used,
however). Some people understand this and make "donations" to the TMO that they
themselves control. Like money to pave a few roads at MUM.
Would I donate? No way. Is this situation reason enough to stop doing TM? For
me, no.
