Well, only revisionists claim that this was the original intent, but it is apparently true that the THREAT of Star Wars made the Soviets overextend their military spending until their economy collasped. Of course, Military analysts had been saying that this was going to happen within a decade or so anyway--Star Wars counter-spending just speeded up the process by a few years.
