Ah, Newport...on Lake Memphramagog, which I know more from the Canadian side but I've spent alot of time in Newport. I used to be a "travelling salesman" there which required that I go into homes to sell. What struck me about the Newport area was how many UNILINGUAL French Canadians -- but U.S. citizens -- lived there...and I was surprised when I had to give my "pitch" in French. There are other pockets of New England where there's alot of French. I'm thinking of that city in Maine, the one where the second Sonny Liston/Cassius Clay fight took place...the one where Clay knocked him out in the first round with the "phantom punch"...oh well, the name of the city escapes me at the moment...anyway, when I was there in the '80s all the signs were bilingual.
