Dear Vaj,

Did you see the news this week? Top university researchers just concluded that *650,000 civilians* have died in Iraq since we invaded. That's more people than live in Seattle, just a few miles from my house. It blew my mind when I read that. And it changed everything.
Like you, I'm a MoveOn member and I know where I stand on this election. I complain with friends about how bad things are. But I'm busy, and honestly I just haven't taken to heart that I could or should change my routine because there's a vote in November.
But that's done. Knowing the true scale of this tragedy, I just can't keep telling myself I'm too busy to fight for a Congress that will act to end it—especially when there's actually something I can do that would help tip the balance.
It begins this weekend. MoveOn members like us are gathering at house parties all over the country to watch a new film that gets the truth out about what's going so wrong in Iraq. We'll also make calls to like-minded voters in close races that will help get them to the polls.
I've had enough, and I'm going to take a few hours this Saturday and do something about it. I hope you'll join me.

The movie we'll be watching, Iraq for Sale, is really powerful. It shows how the Republicans are using Iraq to give blank checks to their cronies in giant corporations, like Halliburton. But it's not just a corrupt waste of money—it's putting our soldiers in serious danger, screwing up the rebuilding and fueling the civil war that's tearing that country apart.

The shocking stories are told through the first hand testimonies of the contractors and American soldiers who saw it happen—very moving.

Learning and sharing these hard truths is important, but it's just the beginning. Over 650,000 Iraqis and thousands of American soldiers have lost their lives because the Republicans in Congress wouldn't stand up to Bush. They didn't when he mislead us into this war, and they won't stand up to Bush or Halliburton now. To end this madness, we've got to get new leadership.

So on Saturday, I'm going to change my routine. I'm going to go to the local Call for Change party and take an hour to call voters in the closest Congressional races to remind them how important their vote is.

To be honest, I'm nervous about making these calls. But not nearly as nervous as I am about waking up in November, reading more stories about the tragedy in Iraq, and knowing I didn't do everything I could to end it.
