Did I say anything in this thread about the causes of poverty? I I was right, you don't understand and never have. Let's start with my
original statement. Until the poor do something worth celebrating they will
always have misery. We can have a safety net for the poor to keep a roof over
their head, clothes on their backs, food on the table. I have no problem with
that. I have no problem with providing free or low cost education or training
for the poor. But until they are willing to take advantage of these things
offered to them to better themselves financially they will always be miserable.
Some people just need to discipline themselves to stay in school and get a high
school diploma instead of dropping out and hanging with a gang and getting in
trouble. Others need to break the cycle of having babies while they are still
babies themselves. Being a teenage mother is almost a guarantee of living in
poverty for the rest of your life. Some people just need to get off drugs which
requires discipline from their side. There can be innumerable reasons why people
are in poverty but at least in the United States the opportunities are there for
most to take advantage of to improve themselves but it is going to require
some effort and commitment from the impoverished person to get out. That is what
I meant by saying until they do something worth *celebrating*. Staying in
school, not having babies until they are financially secure, staying out of
trouble with the law, getting a job and learning to be dependable and
responsible, taking advantage of all the programs available to improve oneself,
like learning a trade of value.
