Evidently this refers to damage *to the woman*, not damage to the fetus. And the passage is a lot more coherent that way. Note that the fetus isn't even mentioned, and that it's the woman's husband, not "the child's father," who gets to demand reparations. Further, look at the list of injuries. A fetus doesn't have any teeth. Nor is a fetus likely to be "burned" as a result of the miscarriage. It makes a lot more sense if it's it's *assumed* here that the fetus dies, and the catalog of possible injuries refers to what may be inflicted on the woman.
