In fact, it is entirely possible that his meds were working just fine. From 
what I understand 
you can have good days and bad days. He had nothing but good days for many 
years while 
he was working and then the disease progressed to the point that he couldn't 
incorporate 
his twitching into his acting. At least, that is my impression watching reruns 
of his later 
shows on TV. It was clear he had the disease back then if you look 
carefully--he just made 
the involuntary movements look like mannerisms and incorporated them into his 
characters. A very brillian actor.
