Your first sentence does not follow from the second,
as you assume. Do you think that *real* people don't
crack jokes and have fun during a war? That's one of
the things that makes them *human*, fer chrissakes.
Pretending that everyone walks around serious all the
time rings false, because it *is*.

> There were occassional flashes of humor.

Cool. I missed them in my few viewings of the show.
Don't get me wrong...if someone laid the whole series
on me and I had the time, I'd give it a shot. I just
came in halfway through, and really *tried* to care
about any of the characters, but couldn't.

Compare and contrast to Firefly. I know people who
caught one episode, without any of the back story,
and were instantly hooked. That's rare in a space opera.

> View from the Gallery was told from the perspective of
> the station janitors during a space battle, for instnce.

That could be done well. I'd have to see it to figure
out which one.

I just never caught the wave, and when I tried to
catch up, it *really* didn't hold my attention. I
think the issue might have been the casting and/or
the characters. I'd say that I saw five or six
episodes, but I can't remember even one of the
characters.
