When I got back from TTC in '72 I still had the little slip of paper
on which I had written down the mantras I had received from Maharishi
when I first got them. When I first got back I was staying at my
parents' home in Saint Louis. They had two dogs, one of them a big
harlequin Great Dane. Sitting one day in their study, with the big
dog asleep on the floor at the other side of the room, I took the slip
out of my wallet, unfolded it, and looked over the list. As soon as I
did that the Great Dane, lifted his head, focused his gaze immediately
over my head and started to growl -- not so much angry, but more startled.

I stopped looking at the list and after a moment or two he stopped
growling and put his head back down but continued glancing under
furrowed brows at the space above my head. I waited a minute or so
until he closed his eyes again and then turned my attention back to my
little list. Immediately he did the same thing, but this time he got
to his feet and backed up a little closer to the door, looking over my
head and growling a lot -- again more scared than mad. I stopped
again and, after a bit, he did, too.

He sat back down and looked at me like he didn't know what was going
on. Me neither. We both sat there for a while looking at each other
and then I looked at the list again.  It was like flipping a switch;
he started to growl again, looking at the same place. I folded it up,
put it away in my wallet and he gave me another puzzled glance and
walked out of the room.
