He worked with brahmins from Benares Hindu University and the Shankaracharya and some local pundits in America (or at least he gives credit to all of those people). But it was not in 1980. It was after he left the TMO. He also used the same sources to develop his meditation technique, which he calls Primordial Sound meditation (which is NOT the same technique that he taught in his TM years). Primordial Sound meditation is the same as TM, but he uses a different pool of mantras.
