VEDIC CITY -- An 80-foot tower has risen in a field north of Fairfield,
and in the next few days, it will begin supplying wind energy to
Maharishi Vedic City's and Maharishi World Peace Vedic Organics' two
greenhouses.
According to Vedic City director of economic development and
director of government relations Kent Boyum, the recycled and rebuilt
wind turbine, a Vestas V15, was generating electricity in California
for 20 years before it was replaced with newer technology.
Now, with the aid of a United States Department of Agriculture
grant that is funding 25 percent of the $92,800 project, the turbine
will be powering Vedic City's organic greenhouses. The debt incurred
for the turbine should be paid off in equivalent energy savings in 10
years, Boyum explained.
He said calculations made through the Iowa Energy Center of Iowa
State University predict the turbine will produce 78,000 kilowatt hours
of electricity per year. The greenhouses currently use one-third that
amount, so the new renewable energy will allow for an expansion of the
greenhouses, he added.
