According to Charles Lutes from the four chapters of his book, he states that the Guru Dev gave MMY a tradition of TM that was not practiced beforehand within the tradition of the ashram under Guru Dev. Guru Dev then entrusted MMY to spread this knowledge, the techniques of TM as we know it. This contradicts what some anti TM people have been saying, that MMY simply took mantras from Sivananda who had been teaching a method of meditation similar to TM before MMY's TM knowledge. Personally, I would tend to believe Lutes' story considering the amount of personal time he spent with MMY and it fits better with my own experience, that TM works according to how MMY has claimed.
