Dear Friends, I have heard from several people that there is a letter to the Editor in today's Ledger that expressed the "if you don't like the train noise in Ff., you can move back where you came from" sentiment. I strongly recommend that we not take "da bait" by responding in kind. The sort of person that writes this kind of letter will never be won over by logic, and all we do by responding is turn the discussion of achieving a quiet zone into a written shouting match. Our goal is to work cooperatively with City government to achieve our goal of a total quiet zone. In my humble opinion this is the only way we will accomplish our goal. Our website http://fairfieldquietzone.org/ is much improved, and now explains not only what we are proposing, but how it can lead to a quiet zone. By using the Federal Railroad Administration quiet zone calculator, I was able to see that if we were able to install median strips on all our 9 crossings, we would automatically get our quiet zone. Click on the "various scenarios" link at the bottom of the page and the first scenario gives the result indicated above. You should also note the estimated cost of $117,000. Unfortunately its not quite this easy, and there is a lot of work to be done. My personal goal is to get our quiet zone by the time the Civic Center opens in late 2007 or early 2008. We'll see if this is achievable. Thanks again to Rick Shaddock for being our webmaster. I am going to make an informational presentation to the Fairfield City Council on Monday Dec. 18th. We want to be sure everyone knows what has changed and why a quiet zone is now a viable propositon. Other towns in Iowa are working on this too, so we are not alone in our efforts. I will provide additional details prior to Dec. 18th, but if you are interested in showing your support for a quiet zone, you should consider attending this meeting. Have a good Thanksgiving.
