Not to mention the quote displayed in the Jefferson
Memorial in Washington: "I have sworn upon the altar
of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny
over the mind of man." That quote was from a letter
dealing with the attempted takeover of a school district
by Christian fanatics, in which they were going to try
to impose their view of what a religious education
should be on everyone.

The founding fathers, having the experience of England
and its attempts to force one religion or another on the
masses fresh in their minds, were probably more concerned
with establishing a nation based on freedom *from* religion
than they were freedom of religion.
