The Isshin-ryu guy I knew - he was a long-time student of the late Sherm
Harrill, who was one of Shimabuku's best early-60's Marine Corp students when
he stationed in Okinawa - used to make the following statements:

"If someone attacks you with a knife, two things are gonna happen - you gonna
get cut and they're going to die."

"The problem dealing with professional boxers/ultimate-fighting types is
that, just breaking an arm or a leg usually won't do it - they're too used to
the pain. The only way to stop them for sure is to kill them (and believe me
you'll have alot of paperwork to fill out after that not to mention the
conscience of what you've done)."

And lastly: "What's the best defense against a baseball-bat attack? Run."

Comments Ken, I'm posting this to inform you and your students of the
death of Sensei Sherm Harrill. Sensei Harrill died yesterday, and I don't know
the cause of death. For those that don't know of this man--he is one of the
countries most respected martial artists. Sensei Harrill (7th/8th dan) taught
Ishin (sp) Ryu karate out of Carson, Iowa. I'm not from the midwest, but I
consider Mr Harrill to be one of the jewels from this part of the country.
Sensei's legacy will be carried on through Mr Kerker (Sensei's senior student),
and all those that he touched during his time with us. My best to all of you,
      Sifu Vince Hardy, Yiliquan

The most important power of a martial artist is to know when to leave the bar
and which bars
(or rings) NEVER to enter in the first place
