************** Never mind: Power outages cause sewage problems DES MOINES REGISTER STAFF February 26, 2007 Weather-related power outages caused sewage to spill form treatment facilities in a pair of cities over the weekend. In Fairfield, sewage was routed to Crow Creek and generators were used to prevent a back up into the plant. "This is a potentially serious situation because if the plant backs up with wastewater, significant damage could occur to the electrical equipment inside," said Russell Royce of the Department of Natural Resouces. Another sewage bypass was reported at West Liberty into Wapsinonoc Creek. Electricity was restored in less than an hour so the amount was minimal, officials said. The city of Fort Madison was also able to stop bypassing Sunday morning after a power outage, followed by a failed generator, forced bypassing of partially treated sewage into the Mississippi River. Other cities reporting bypassing on Sunday due to power problems were Garrison in Benton County, Mt. Vernon in Linn County, Westgate in Fayette County and Plymouth in Cerro Gordo County. "Although bypassing of sewage is never a desirable situation, it does sometimes have to be done if the result could be to have sewage back up into private homes and businesses which would create a greater risk to human health," natural resources spokesman Kevin Baskins said.
