About a year and a half ago, I messed around with the live CD versions of Ubuntu and Knoppix, neither of which will run on this PC (they both hang at some point in the boot up.) They work fine on my laptops for basic stuff, but there was some network ap I wanted to try, and it wouldn't work because it needed root access, which was either not possible or impossibly difficult for me to figure out. IMO, Linux is still for hardcore geeks. For an easy to use, dumbed down version of *nix, I'd go with a top-of-the-line desktop Mac with dual 30" monitors. But, I'll probably just stick with Windows because of its ubiquity and the fact that so much multimedia content is in Windows Media Player format.
