Take a portable AM radio (a cheap on will do) and tune it where there is 
no station and turn the volume halfway.  You can use that as a rough EMF 
detector.  Where you hear noise you've got EMF.   I found that with my 
CRT monitor any noise dropped off within a few inches. Same was true of 
an LCD monitor.
