At this point, I'd guess, it's stylistic, what
other 12th century Buddhist paintings looked like.
They may eventually do scientific testing of some
sort, but I doubt they've gotten to that yet (if
they had, they'd be more definite about the dating).

Notice that the story as "back *at least* to the
12th century," which seems to indicate they also
think the paintings could be older.

I wish there were more on the Web about the find!
They should create a Web site with lotsa photos and
detailed information.
