According to Maharishi, the Vedic scriptures deal with the three modes of material nature, the three gunas; in order to become self-realized, you must transcend the three modes in pure spiritual conciousness, free from duality and be free from all conceptions of acquisition and preservation. This is the keystone in the arch to understanding the Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2 Verse 45: actions are in all cases concerned with the three gunas; yoga is being free from these three constituents.
