Rory, it sounds to me as if you would really enjoy the TV series "Dexter." For me it's one of the best essays on *compassion* I've ever encountered, and for me that term means a lot of what you seem to mean when you use the term unconditional love. Dexter is a nerdy guy who works as a forensic investigator for the Miami Police Department. But he moonlights as a serial killer. He's played by Michael C. Hall, who played the gay brother in "Six Feet Under," and he's excellent, but he's only one member of a superb ensemble cast of characters, *all* of whom eventually inspire you to feel almost as much compassion for them as you begin to feel for Dexter himself. Dexter is not for everyone. But if you can manage to find seeing yourself as Goering uplifting, then getting inside the head of a serial killer is going to be no problemo. The first season is available on DVD.
