I should clarify my post below: The region, including Kansas, was
known as "The Missourri Territory" around the time that Joseph Smith
had his channeling revelations. It had only just been reverted to a
sort of a state 2 years earlier or so. How hard is it to surmise
that those in the East especially (such as Smith in New York), would
have thought of it as "The Missourri Territory", and bear in mind
that the name Missourri comes from the name given to the tribal
peoples that roamed that whole region of the Great Plains.

Originally, all those states of that region were called
the "Louisianna Purchase", but were re-named "The Missouri
Territory" in 1812 (includes what we today call "Kansas".)

"The Missouri Territory was a historic, organized territory in the
United States. It was originally known as the Louisiana Territory
and was renamed on June 4, 1812 to avoid confusion with the state of
Louisiana which joined the Union in 1812. The Arkansas Territory was
separated from the Missouri Territory in 1819. The state of Missouri
was separated out from the territory in August 10, 1821."
