peaceful townspeople were always getting caught in the crossfire."

People don't have to read posts. They are not like bullets that
intersect with your life without invitation. This analogy doesn't work
for me.

They are, though. In my own experience, I made a post a couple weeks ago and
got stuff back like "bronte baxter -- the faggy guy with the girly name." Even
if a visitor hasn't posted yet and been attacked personally, he sees all the
personal attack so many posters are engaged in. If he decides to join in on a
thread, he knows he's risking being the target for some stranger's malice. So
why participate?

I don't think you or anyone else knows why people don't post. It
is a personal decision. No one knows how many
people lurk and like it that way.

Several FFL members have mentioned how they miss the participation of a
number of people who used to post regularly and then disappeared. In a
business, if you have 980 people who have bought from you and now only 30 come
in, you start to question what's become of the others. I agree there's no
knowing for sure why anybody left, or how many visit but don't choose to post.
But the odds are pretty good that 960 people aren't sitting there lurking.
