I agree that this debate is covering a lot of old ground, so I'll try to
just make the Faithless-related points and leave it at that. I'm about
to pack my computer up in order to move house so I'll be off the 'Net
for a while anyway, which might help calm the debate down...

Whilst there are plenty of people on this list for whom this is true,
I'm sure it's not "all".
I'm sure that there are people on this list, especially lurkers, who
have MP3s of commercially available Faithless tracks, and as a result
haven't bothered to buy the CDs or whatever.
I'm sure that if a URL for the "We Come One" MP3s was posted here, some
people on this list would download them and as a result, not buy the CD.

I didn't say that they reckoned it wouldn't, you're putting words into
my mouth there.
Promo CDs are sent out, primarily, for reviews, radio play, and other
legitimate causes. The fact the tracks will become MP3s is a known deal,
in the same way that record companies know full well that promo CDs
marked "promo only not for resale" will get sold on and traded without
the band/record company seeing a penny (which, on a different note, is
how people on this list have already managed to get their hands on the
promos- if you look hard enough, and it's not that hard, then these
promos turn up).
They know that it happens, but that doesn't mean that that's why they
send out the CDs in the first place, nor does it necessarily mean that
they would be happy about it or "it's what they would've wanted". Maybe
it is, maybe it isn't.
And yes, it will increase their fanbase, which is good. But for every
extra CD it sells, it will lose them at least one sale somewhere else,
which is bad.
Anyway, I'm veering off the Faithless point here, so I'll give up and
let somebody else be 'sanctimonious' instead of me.
Stuart.
