And I checked on Fanfic archivists - and got a response (if you're
interested :)) that yes, it could be pretty much the same but depends on
lots of things like how full the cache is.
It's a trade off really, isn't it? The length of time it takes for one
larger page to display versus the length of time to click on, request and
load up a series of pages. I found, even as a dial up user, that I had
problems displaying larger pages because they wouldn't always download
properly. OTOH, even as a dial up user shorter page lengths used to
occasionally irk me :) I found that if it was something like a story I
could be reading the top while the bottom was still loading :)
Of course, these days I have a cable modem :)
I suppose the most equitable answer would be to offer it both as one large
html version and shorter parts but I'm too lazy to do that <g> I think
I'll go for my usual parts but larger parts methodology, with an absolute
upper limit of 150k, as I've always done. Most are considerably smaller
and it means that the longest possible time for download would be circa 45
secs, with a 28kps modem. No matter what I do it's going to be painful for
anyone with a slower modem than to read a fic of that length, no matter how
many parts it's in :)
Thanks for your comments, Nancy :)
