If this is something that will consume a lot of time or will have to be repeated later, you could always write your own admin utility to bulk set the status of objects. I did something like that to help organise images into categories.

The branch approve on approves one level. I need to approve numerous
html pages. The admin process would have been idea to selectively bulk
approve pages, I know this is probably not a common admin function,
however we have not pushed our site live yet.
