You use to be able to insert from the tree. You now need to associate a file/image to your content item from the relevant widget and then insert.

Sounds like you might be using IE. This is an issue that I believe is fixed in the current maintenance branch. I'm pretty happy with p300_b109 (the latest stable tagged build) and we've been running this on several production servers for a couple of weeks. I'll likely be releasing this as 3.0.1 shortly.
