Grab the tutorials off Jeff's site (http://farcrycms.org/go/documentation/user-manuals) and look at the sections on extendingCoreComponents.
For the most part in the tutorials, you are actually extending types.cfc, which extends fourQ.cfc. But you will very quickly get the hang of it; by examining what happens at the types.cfc level, and how it passes things off to the fourQ API, you will be up and running very quickly.
