I will try and be a bit more assertive with the client and try and reason for some structure, arguing that controlled content structure means less pain for them when they need to update content in the side bar..... and do as you suggest, define various page templates, some with news bits, some with random facts etc. etc.
If that doesn't work out, your other suggestion is really handy... you have inspired me to do a bit of research and I have just found out how to extend the core type functionality... damn FarCry is cool!
