Draft & Approved: refer to the workflow status of that item. Locked: when you edit an item it gets locked. It unlocks when you save. This is to prevent two people from editing the same item at the same time. If you don't exit the item gracefully (you close the browser from the edit page) it won't have the chance to unlock it. In wizard edit pages canceling doesn't unlock the item.
The lists on the front page are simply a way to keep track of what items you are working on or 'have open'.
