Most of Ray Camden's apps are built using the same pattern. I have done some trivial integration of his blog into farcry w/little more than a few hours invested. Basically, I set his app name to be identical to the FC app name, and them manually called my farcry header/footer from his layout.
If you have cash, you could also grab FuseTalk. It is a fusebox app, so it will easily integrate via a dmInclude. Neither of these sol'ns expose the apps admin in the FC backend, but you could tweak that via the customadmin.xml if needed.
