On Thursday, August 2, MayoClinic.com relaunched after several months of effort migrating from FarCry v3 to v4. We originally launched the site on FarCry v3 after a year-long conversion from Spectra in October of 2005.
I'd like to highlight two specific things amid the hundreds of changes that we made to our application. First, we converted all of our internal editing interfaces from PLPs (yuck) to FarCry 4 Form Tools. The amount of code now in use to manage our 53 custom types dropped from 12,340 Lines of code to 8013 LOC. Not only do we now have less code to maintain, but we also have richer, more consistent interfaces for our users. Second, we replaced our caching mechanism by implementing ObjectBroker caching for both content objects and webskins. Our internal monitors report sub-second response times under considerable daily load. Typical traffic is between 1.5 and 2 million page views/day. This was done by three developers (Jason Betz, Bryan Sorensen and myself) our application DBA, Steve Hoerle, who helped manage and migrate data and schema changes from our v3 to v4 databases, and our system admin, Norman Yap, who cut over our entire dev, build, test and production environments on launch day without a single interruption in service. Finally, a big thanks to Mat Bryant who flew all the way to Southern Minnesota from Sydney to help kick off the project and provide ongoing support over IM and phone.
